Ancelotti not ruling out counterattack

Ancelotti's pedigree brings the promise of delivering wins for Real with spectacular style, something which has been interpreted as a commitment to playing attractive, creative football, moving away from the counterattack.

His predecessor built a team based on a well-defined pattern: pressure, power and falling back to steal the ball and, with direct balls, hit the opposition in the counterattack.
Ancelotti not ruling out counterattack

After four Spanish league games, and above all in its Champions League opening match, traces of Mourinho are still visible in Real. Cristiano Ronaldo, Di María, Benzema, Modric, Pepe...The players are comfortable playing counterattacks and diligently seek them out.

Istanbul was the latest demonstration of a team that is almost unstoppable when on a charge and capable of scoring that way. Four of Real Madrid's six goals against Galatasaray came out of a counter, with Cristiano and Benzema taking the starring roles.

Ancelotti has not outlawed this strategy, believing it to be just as valid as any other style of play. It is true, however, that the Italian has stressed the value of ball possession to his players. He wants lots of passing, creative play and for the team to avoid making hasty moves.

In the first half of the Istanbul match, Real Madrid could be seen to be passing, patiently looking for a crack in the opponent's defence. Ancelotti still believes that, over the course of the season, they will come up against teams that will close them down and they will have to disarm these with more elaborate combinations. Especially at the Bernabéu.
